Before we begin, you need to have a basic understanding how Photoshop works and at least the default layer on the bottom with your sketch, and a layer for all the coloring in normal or multiply mode. If you are that far, we can begin...
Shadows
There are 2 ways to create shadows: Using black at lower opacity and using a darker hue of your base color.
Using Black:
1) Create a new layer and put it on top of the layer that you colored your sketch in. You can set it to Normal or Multiply mode. Change the opacity of the layer to anywhere between 25 and 50%. The lower the opacity the softer the shadow will be. 2) Select black as your color and put shadows where you would think they would be according to your light source. 3) Go up to the Filter menu and select Gaussian Blur. A window will appear. This is where you will create how soft your shadows will be. Make sure you have the preview box checked. 4) I usually will set it anywhere from 22 to 45. The higher the setting the more dispersed and softer the shadow will be. And there you go, nice soft shadows. For shadowing using a darker hue, follow the steps above Instead of using black go to the color picker and choose a darker shade of the color you used to color your drawing in.
For highlights, use white or a lighter shade of the color you used to do the coloring and put it in a different layer
above the base color layer. Enjoy ^^ |
